Ice Sucks

I think I have post-ice-storm-stress-disorder.  Yesterday we received another think coat of ice (almost an inch!) and lost power for a total of about 8 hours.   Last night we went to bed with the sound of limbs snapping and transformers exploding all around our neighborhood.  Way too much like the first night of the ice storm last year, where we lost power for 10 days.  I really don't think I could handle that again.

Thankfully (!) this morning our power was restored, and they're predicting temps to rise into the 50s by Wednesday.   The bad news is that somehow we managed to get way worse damage to our trees last night than last year, when the trees were coated with ice for over two weeks!   I'm hoping the winds that we're supposed to get today don't make it any worse.

ETA – Tuesday afternoon – my husband just texted me – the power's out again and a large branch from my pecan tree is breaking my beloved dogwood tree.  Dang, dang, dang!!!

  1. I’m so glad you got the power back so quickly. And yes, it’s supposed to warm up tomorrow, but there’s another winter storm that’s supposed to hit this weekend. Blarg.

  2. Wish you would have called ’cause we have a guest bed with clean sheets and plenty of power – for now. Steve’s in Phoenix so you could have kept me company! Glad you have the power back on. Call or email if you need anything. I’m not planning to leave unless I have to go to school. And even then, I might not leave the house!

  3. You’d think that after last year there wouldn’t be any limbs left to break but I really think the ice is thicker and so many limbs were weakened last year so this is their death knell. We too are losing plenty of limbs. Makes me sad to see how much damage the ice does. Glad you got your power back – call if you need a warm guest room – our dog would love the company!

  4. Lurker here, outing self. I’ve been reading for several months, and didn’t realize until the last Knit-In (my first) at Simply Fibers that it was you, of this blog! Small world.
The ice, man. It IS crazy. I was working at Bass Pro corporate during the big storm last year, and every tree on the property keeled over from the weight of the ice. They had ‘em propped up with ladders, etc., to try to keep them from snapping in the middle, but still lost the majority. We lost a couple, too, but they were young trees. I just wonder how we’re ever going to replace them, if the new baby trees suffer death-by-ice every winter….

  5. Having lived through an horrific ice-storm in 1998, I know exactly what you mean. The power goes out and you start thinking it’ll be 2 weeks before it comes bakc and it was awful the last time and ohmigawd what to do…etc. Been there, bought the tshirt. Unfortunately. Here’s hoping the trees do well.

  6. You know, until I started reading your blog, I thought the Ice Storm was just a good movie directed by Ang Lee. I do not know how you survive this year after year! Can I interest you in a holiday to Oz? And tell that pecan to back off! Stop bothering dogwood!

  7. Need dogwood tree update? Did it make it? You know how I love dogwoods!
I saw a redbud tree in Jerusalem a couple of days ago. That was pretty cool – it didn’t look much different that ours does in summer time. They actually have a winter but not like ours.
