Summer Reading

My husband Matt and I will be driving to the beautiful Colorado Rockies in less than a week, and I’m having great fun thinking about all the things I could do with my time off. Reading… knitting… hiking… biking… Oh yeah, don’t forget eating at great restaurants!
I am pretty well set in the book department thanks to a productive trip to the local used bookstore. As far as knitting goes, I think I’ll wind up the rest of the yarn for a cotton sweater I started recently, and maybe I’ll actually be able to finish it.
For the hiking, rafting, and other outdoor activites, I still need to do some research and look at some maps before we go, BUT I also need to make sure that I don’t overschedule my vacation with a million activities, as I have a bad habit of doing. I really want this to be a relaxing vacation, but I fall into the trap of feeling like I’m “wasting” my time off if I’m not out doing something every second of the day.
Still though – I really need to chill. Between school, work, and volunteer activities, Matt and I are ridiculously busy. We haven’t really even sat down and talked about what we want to do on this trip. I guess at least we’ll have something to talk about during the 13 hours in the car on the way there!!
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is supposed to be really good. I hope you and Matt get a chance to really relax together and enjoy yourselves.
Sounds like a great vacation and you’re doing what I always do which is making sure I have enough “activities” for the trip. I hate to run out of knitting projects or books to read! I’ve read all the books you’ve shown in your blog. “Middlesex” is one of my all-time favorites. “The Guernsey Literary Society and Potato Peel Pie Society” is a delight and I’ll admit I almost didn’t finish “The corrections” but I did. His stuff is a bit heavy.
Have fun and I’ll look forward to seeing photos when you return – we love going to Colorado as it’s such a beautiful state.
A friend and I did a 3 week camping trip through the Colorado mountains one time. I took my Scrabble game, which obviously is not a standard thing to do. We got stranded at a campground because of rain and some park problems. So we played Scrabble a LOT. We still laugh about my insisting that we take the game along, and how much fun it was to play by lamplight.
I think the fact that you realize you shouldn’t overplan (and thus overextend) yourself during your holiday is perfect. Enjoy yourself, read, relax, knit…and throw away any clock or watch.
Have a great vacation! (I want to read Middlesex! I heard it’s good.)
