Apparently we’ve had a very slow leak from the water valve that connects to the fridge for several years. As you can see, the damage is quite extensive. It goes under the cabinets, and also into 2 adjoining rooms.
Since we have to replace a good portion of our subfloor, which includes removing the cabinets to get to it, the floor project has somehow turned into a “why not?” kitchen remodel. As in, “Since they’re removing the cabinets anyway, why don’t we get new cabinets? Actually, how about new appliances, too? And, we’ve never really liked the layout of the kitchen – why don’t we switch where the dining room and kitchen are?”
Of course, all of this hinges on how much various things are going to cost to fix. It’s fun to dream about how you might remodel your house someday, but I feel like I’ve been forced into it because of this big leak, and it’s making me pretty nervous about the whole situation. I wish the various contractors would hurry up and get some prices back to us, so at least we know what we’re dealing with, cost-wise.
I’ll keep you posted!
Good luck with making all those decisions! I hope you figure out a solution that doesn’t break the bank but your still happy with.
ack! Scary! I wonder if your home owners insurance would cover anything since there was a leak (just be sure not to use the word flood) that caused the damage. From my experience it costs more to have plumbing moved then it is to leave a sink where it is and work around it. Now would be the perfect time to move your kitchen around, we did the same thing when the washer line broke and ruined our kitchen floor. The more work you do yourself the more money you will save. If you guys can remove everything from the kitchen that will save you lots and its not that hard. Same thing with putting down the flooring. Laminate is really easy! Good luck!!!
I know what you mean, sometimes I wish contractors would hurry up. My backyard is still a giant mud pit cause they still aren’t done playing with the dirt. grrr. I miss grass.
I totally love this show http://www.diynetwork.com/search/results.do?diySearchString=10+grand+in+your+hand&diySearchType=diynetwork.com
Deep breath! It will all be okay! Just make friends with your local pizza delivery guy, do what you can to reduce the cost, and hang on until it’s over. And show before/after pictures!
Oh my goodness, WOW! I guess on the upside it’s fun to have a new kitchen AND floors! Good luck.
OMG- Congrats and sorry! All at once. It’s gonna be great!
Shucks! That’s a bummer. But, dreaming is fun! Hope you can get the new kitchen/dining room you want at the price you want! I’ll be looking forward to before and after pics.

Oh Sarah, that is such a nightmare! I hope it is fixed for less than you expect and you get a shiny new kitchen out of it. (A place for all those happy, gorgeous garden veggies!)
