Photos at last!
Here it is, the sock that has given me so much grief. You will notice the lovely colorway, "Java," which is boring enough for men's socks, but interesting enough to keep the knitter entertained. You will also notice the heel flap construction, which I was not planning on doing, but I couldn't quite master the short-row. What you may not be able to see is that I RAN OUT OF YARN AGAIN! This is exactly why I wanted to start toe-up, but I couldn't figure it out. I was almost ready to tear my eyes out, but my dear friend Meredith pointed out that I could just do the toe in a complimentary color. It will be inside a shoe most of the time anyway. Thank you Meredith -- my sanity remains intact thanks to you!Posted by zarah at October 24, 2005 10:00 AM

Great idea about the toe!!! And nice sock too! So I have a question about toe up socks... because I have decided that I hate, hate, hate Kitchener stitch. I mean really hate it. So I'm wanting to try to the Turkish cast on that I've been seeing, but does that mean that I can't use any of the patterns for regular socks? Is there a way to convert the regular patterns for toe up socks? Did I mention that I HATE Kitchener stitch?

Great solution on the toe - I think socks like that are super cute. That same knitty article of Wendy's has some great info on short row heels. That might help you in the future. And Jeanie (if she checks back) - any sock pattern can be knit toe up, you just substitute the toe-up for the toe shaping at the end of the pattern and away you go.
