Music & Running
For each half-marathon that I run, I like to make a mix of songs to train with. I was lucky enough to inherit my husband's ipod nano whenever he just HAD to have a new video ipod, so its really easy to run with music now. (My old ipod was a first generation one, much larger and heavier than the new ones. Plus it skipped when I ran. Very annoying.) So anyway, back to my running music. I've started compiling a Route 66 Mix for the Route 66 Half-Marathon that I'll be running in November. So far, it mostly consists of fast songs that I've downloaded each week from iTunes' Free Downloads section. (This is a great way to get new music that you wouldn't otherwise pay for, fyi). I've got a pretty good mix going, but if it's going to last me an entire half marathon, I need over two hours of music. I was hoping some of you other knitter/exercisers might have some suggestions of favorite workout songs for me. Any ideas? I like all kinds of music - pretty much my only requirement is that it have a fairly fast tempo to keep me moving. My all-time favorite running song is Tainted Love.
Weekly workout update: I must admit, I have been a slacker again this week. But I think Vegas recuperation is a perfectly legitimate excuse for sleeping in.
I ran about a mile and a half on Thursday and I will probably go to the gym and run 3 miles after work tonight. (I ran outside yesterday and it is WAY to hot to be doing that at 6:00 pm.)
I'm meeting some friends to run Saturday morning - they're planning to run 8 miles.... I should be able to run that distance with them. They usually follow the Jeff Galloway run/walk approach to marathon training. That's the "run X minutes, then walk a minute" routine that makes it SO much easier to run longer distances. It's hard to do at first, when you're feeling good at the beginning of a run, but I feel like I have much more energy at the end of the run if I stick to the run/walk schedule.

One of my favorite up-tempo songs for working out is What You Waiting For by Gwen Stefani, also Zak and Sara and Rocking' the Suburbs, both by Ben Folds and several songs from Maroon 5's Songs About Jane album. Good luck with your half-marathon. Isn't that in Tulsa?

Seems like Penny and I have similar tastes--I was going to recommend that Gwen Stefani song. Another one that always gets me going is Mr. Brightside by The Killers. Whenever I hit that tough part in a workout it always gets me through.

Hey, girl! Way to go on the training. As a music therapist & former half-marathoner, I share your sentiment that running music is KEY to a successful race. I usually like to put in some upbeat silly songs towards the middle and end of my running program... a good laugh seems to really help me get through those moments when I'm wondering what the heck I was thinking.
One of my favorites: Eastbound and Down. It's the theme song from Smoky & the Bandit and, although it is country, is quite uplifting. It's kind of a goofy selection, but has a really good beat, and it's about a race. Albeit a different type of race, but it has great lines like, "...just put that hammer down & give it hell!!!!'
Also, I enjoyed Wierd Al, Evanessence and almost anything by Bon Jovi.
Happy running!

Hey ya by Outkast
Suicide Blonde by INXS
I used to run to Ministry's CD Keianh. It's angry, and I can't understand a word of it, but it's fast industrial metal, which fit the bill.

I always thought that INXS' "Listen Like Thieves" album was superb walking / running music.
So is John Mellencamp, especially if it's got Kenny Aranoff drumming on it.

First, Can you PLEASE tell me where the free downloads section is?? I have never heard of it.
I have some "pick me up songs" that I listen to when I need to speed up my work out. One of them is "Let's Get Loud(Pablo Flores Remix)" by JLO. It's cheesy, but it works! And "Mr. Blue Sky" by Electric Light Orchestra. The beat is perfect.

Hi there... your socks look fabulous. And I hope they'll go well with the scarf I'll be knitting for you.
I'm going to buy the supplies today!
As for music, I've always been a fan of the Manic Street Preachers for working out. Especially the Forever Delayed remixes.

Back in my gym-going days so long ago, I used to like to listen to OutKast's Stankonia while I was working out. The pace definitely fit the bill.
