Ugh!
Those on Ravelry will recognize that sentiment.Glee is finished (mostly - ends not woven in yet), but I'm not thrilled. It's kinda big and bulky, when it was supposed to be sleek and streamlined.... grrrrrrr.
I've got some ideas on how to fix it. I'll keep you posted!

Ainsley's Quilt: in pieces
I'm up to my old baby-quilt making ways again! This time it's for Baby Ainsley.... who will be making her appearance in May! She is a VERY long-awaited baby being born to good friends of ours, so I knew she needed a special present.
All these red, pink, and orange-toned fabrics will be stitched into five columns alternating with strips of brown fabric to make the Stacked Coins Quilt from Last-Minute Patchwork Gifts by Joelle Hoverson. It's such a beautiful book - Joelle Hoverson definitely knows her color theory! (I hope I can do her design justice with my more reasonably-priced fabric selections!)
PS for sewers and quilters - Jo-Ann's had all their fat quarters on sale for 99 cents last time I was there!

Attention Yarn Swappers!
Hey kiddos - I'm getting the feeling that some of the long-time swappers are starting to get a little hand-dyed yarn swap fatigue. So, for July, I think that we're going to totally start over. Anyone who wants to sign up for July needs to let me know - otherwise you won't be assigned a swap partner. I know summer is a busy time for those with kids at home, etc., and I don't want this swap to be a burden on anyone.
Do YOU want to join the swap? Here are the details!
- 1 skein of sock yarn, or enough to make a pair of socks
- Hand-dyed by YOU, either Kool-Aid, acid dyes or anything in between
- Swap with a partner, who will be assigned to you
- Mail the yarn by the 15th of the month
- To sign up, leave a comment or send me an email by JUNE 28

June Yarn Swap - lucky me!
This month, I was paired with Jeanie from Dances With Yarn and CrochetCast for the Project Spectrum Yarn Swap. Apparently whoever she was paired with last month made quite an impression, because she totally spoiled me with all kinds of blue goodies! Between the beautiful Hill Country Yarn, the icy blue beaded bracelet, and the shiny boxes of mints, it was like a cool breeze came blowing right out of the box! Thanks Jeanie! I can't wait to see how this yarn knits up. But....I am forcing my self to wait just a bit. If you remember from last week, I had a major case of startitis. Right now, I have four projects actively being worked on, which is quite a few for me. The problem is, I'm not really thrilled with all of them.
- The second blue Trekking XXL sock. I worked on this a bit during my family reunion, but you know how it goes... second socks are boring. Still, I might be able to finish in June if I put my mind to it!
- The yellow wrap. I did end up starting over with bigger needles. I like how this project is turning out, it just takes a LOT of concentration to work on, so that means usually I choose a more mindless project. I might get shoved to the back burner for a while, just depends how I'm feeeling.
- The Cotton Tape tank top. Hmmm... there's something I don't like about the pattern I picked - I think the k3togs look really weird in yarn as thick as the Cotton Tape. Plus, I keep seeing Lolly's progress on the Carla pullover and I love the finished product, maybe I should do that instead.
- The diagonal short-row scarf. I got the pretty Diakeito yarn from the sale bin, which means I was limited to amount left when I bought it - turns out 3 skeins isn't enough to make a decent-sized scarf. Short scarves are just annoying. I tried t get around the problem by making it a keyhole scarf (where you slip one end of the scarf through a slit instead of wrapping it around your neck) but I don't think the yarn, which is 1-ply, would hold up well to repeated wear of pulling over itself. So... I ripped out the last skein and started the Short-Row Hat from Interweave Winter 2005 (free online pattern). As you can tell, I firmly believe that this yarn is meant to be in short rows!
So, no progress pics because everything is 1 step forward, two steps back these days.

Hand-dyed Yarn Swap Update
I realized I had never reported on my May round of dyeing for the yarn swap. Since Jessica has already received her yarn (she likes it - yippee!) there's nothing left to keep secret.
I don't have too many dyes at my disposal - I'm still using Kool-Aid and the occasional drop of food coloring - but I wanted to make some subtle variations of a fairly bright green, so I experimented with different combos - a drop of red food coloring tones down the electric green Kool-Aid color. As you can see, I used three drinking glasses submerged in boiling water to dye the three different colors all at once.
Here's the final product all skeined up and looking pretty. I really hated to send this one out, I really liked it. The yarn Jessica made for me is much more neon (it's called "Alien Invasion") but it will make a really fun pair of socks. (hmmm.... I guess I need to take a picture! Swap partners were sent out yesterday, so let me know if you have any questions!

Hand-Dyed Yarn Swap: JUNE
Don't you love Project Spectrum? It has really pushed me in some new directions this spring, especially exploring yellow and orange. But then there's June.... The color for June is BLUE in all of its wonderful variations: sky, ocean, indigo, turquiose, navy, slate, robin's egg, and more. And who, at some point in their lives, hasn't called blue their favorite color. And let's not forget that blue that looks good on everyone - your favorite pair of blue jeans.
I can't wait to see the blues everyone comes up with for June's Hand-Dyed Yarn Swap. If you are already participating the swap, I will assume you want to join for June unless you tell me otherwise. If you want to join the fun, send me an email or leave me a comment! The deadline for June sign-ups is THIS SUNDAY, MAY 28. Matches will be sent out in early June. Yarn should be mailed by June 15th, unless you arrange otherwise with your pal. Buy your yarn now, kids - it's time for another exciting round of THE SWAP!
PS - In other yarn-dyeing related news, I may start dyeing some yarn for sale at my LYS. We're still working out the details, but I'll let you know if anything happens!

Project Spectrum Postcard Swap!
Isn't this postcard beautiful? It's completely made of fabric by my extremely talented swap partner, Patricia. I love the color combo - very summery - and it also struck a sentimental chord. It looks really similar to the crazy quilts my grandma used to make. She was one of those thrifty, depression-era grandmas that never let anything go to waste, but she still had quite an eye for color. Her quilts were always made with scraps from dresses she had made for my mom and her sisters. I loved looking at the quilts as a kid, because my mom would point out the different quilt pieces and tell me whose dress it was and what occasion grandma made it for. Does crafty run in your family?Posted by zarah at 7:00 AM | Comments (7)

PS Yarn Swap - last day to sign up
First of all, thanks to Lu (one of our swap members and my swap partner last time around) for the picture that I blatantly stole off flickr without asking. (Bad Zarah.)The good news is, it's almost time for the next round of the PS Hand-Dyed Yarn Swap! (In hindsight, I should have come up with a catchier name. Suggestions anyone?) I will close entries from May at 6pm Central Standard Time (aka, when Zarah gets home from work).
As I'm sure you all know, the color for May is GREEN. There are so many different shades of green, from wild neon to green grass to avocado, and everything in between. I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.
In knitting news here at Beautyschooldropout, not all is well. I'm almost finished with the front of Orangina, but my right hand is killing me. Typing all day at work and knitting with cotton in the evening does not suit Zarah well. It's really frustrating me because I want to wear Orangina. Also, I've knit and ripped it enough times that it would be done by now if I hadn't made so many mistakes. Argh....

PS Yarn Swap Update
Thanks to all the current swap participants who have put the beautiful pictures of hand-dyed yarn up on their blogs. I love it all. For anyone who's been seeing these great dye-jobs and wants to join in the fun, it's not too late to join. Sign-ups for May end on the 25th, swaps to go out before the last day of May. Yarn should be dyed and mailed by May 15th.
If you signed up for April and haven't told me otherwise, I'm assuming you want to continue in May. Let me know ASAP if you don't want to play.

The Dogwoods are Blooming in the Ozarks!
What a beautiful time of year. Today the temperatures hit 80 degrees, and the dogwoods and redbuds are in full bloom.I am at home enjoying the weather, after two days of nearly non-stop work. Just sitting on the patio, drinking a beer and eating some tortilla chips. (yum) No, it's not the healthiest thing, but I figure I deserve it!
Several of the Project Spectrum yarn swappers have asked me if they need to sign up for next month's swap. The general sentiment of the people who have emailed me is that they want to be in every month's swap. So, if you are currently signed up and do not want to participate in May's swap - leave a comment or email me and let me know.
Otherwise, if you aren't signed up for May and want to be, email me by APRIL 25. For all the info on the swap, click here.
I had a "layover" in Bolivar MO for a couple of hours today (waiting between my court appearances) and I had a chance to knit on Orangina - I made up my progress that I had to rip out last weekend. Yippee!

Campo di granturcos
I have to admit - I have no idea what that means, either.... my guess: big country turkeys! (or perhaps field of daffodils?)
But whatever you call it, you have to admit - this yarn is beautiful! I received it in the mail a few days ago from my Project Spectrum Hand-dyed yarn Swap pal, Lu. I am really swamped with work these days, but in my head I am casting on for a pair of socks out of Knitting Vintage Socks... maybe something a little lacey.
Just as a reminder (to myself and everyone else in the yarn swap), yarn should be mailed out by April 15th (this weekend) so it arrives in time for the recipient to enjoy it during April!
I think I've mentioned before that I'm knitting Orangina as part of the Sexy Knitter's Club Knitalong. I had a chance to work on this in the car on the way to St. Louis this weekend - I did make some progress but I also had to rip back quite a bit after realizing I had dropped a stitch. That seems to be the purpose of this project - to remind me that I still make mistakes... a LOT of them! I love the pattern, and it's not complicated, but this is my first time knitting a lace pattern and it's so easy to get off track.
I tried using stitch markers to keep track of the stitches, but the pattern moves around - every other knit row is offset by one stitch. Any advice?

FO: Stripey Socks
Voila! A finished pair of red & yellow socks for Project Spectrum!Project Details:
Pattern: Universal Sock Pattern, with an eight stitch pattern - stockinette for 5 sts, seed stitch for 3 sts.
Yarn: Lana Grossa superwash.
Needle Size: Size 2, 5 DPNs
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, slip stitches, decrease, picking up stitches.
Pattern Modifications: I added my own ribbing pattern to the basic Universal Sock Pattern.
Time to knit: My first post about these socks was March 15... so I'm going to say they took about a month. That is BY FAR the fastest I've ever knit a pair of socks.
Final impressions: Fun & quick-to-knit socks. I got this yarn from my Secret Pal. The socks are for my sister, and she really liked the first sock I did, so hopefully she will get a lot of wear out of them. Probably not until fall, though - it looks like warm weather has moved in to stay.

Bamboozled!
As promised, here is a close-up of my progress on the bamboo basket I'm knitting. It's orange and red, so it *kind of* counts for April's Project Spectrum.Like I said yesterday, this stitch pattern looks cool, but it is a beast to knit. Especially since I'm trying not to break the little bamboo fibers in the yarn. It would probably be easier in yarn with a little more give, like wool or even a cotton blend.
I've ben really busy at work lately, so I haven't been knitting much. But when I do, I want a mindless knit, and this is not it..at least yet. I just do not have the "feel" of knitting this in my hands yet. So anway, I'll probably be casting on a pair of simple socks soon to feed the need for stockinette! (I got some Regia cotton/acrylic blend on elann for a pretty good price - you should check it out!)

The Project Spectrum is blooming like crazy!
Is anyone else as impressed as I am at the rapid pace that orange and yellow are taking over blogland? I love that people are taking on the challenge of finding beauty in colors that they might otherwise overlook.I harvested some lovely red and orange bamboo yarn from my garden last weekend (I wish!) and I have already cast on for one of my Project Spectrum-themed projects this April, Bamboozelle. It's knitted basket, made using a basket-weave stitch pattern. I love how it is knitting up, but I have to warn you - do NOT make this project if you don't like to wrestle with your knitting. I feel like I'm really getting a workout - lots of knitting through the back of the second stitch of other craziness. I'll post a progress pic tomorrow.
Thanks for all the suggestions for what to make with my new Cotton Fleece I got from Julie, my not-secret-anymore Secret Pal. Unfortunately I come up with new projects for myself much quicker than I actually finish the ones I have. I start to get confused and make lots of mistakes when I have more than three projects going, so the Cotton Fleece tank top will have to wait.
The good news is I have almost finished the second sock for my sister! (It's a March & April Project Spectrum project - red & yellow!) So that means I get to start a new project soon.

Super-naranja!
Ah, April is finally here and it is sock-yarn dyein' time! My friend Meredith (pictured here - tragically blogless!) and I got together last Sunday afternoon to dye some yarn for our Project Spectrum sock yarn swap pals. We used a combination of Easter Egg dye (yellow) and Drink-Aid (orange). It is now dried and still smelling quite fruity! Now we just have to hunt down a ball-winder (our LYS has its winder out of commission during the annual Spring clearance sale).
For more sock-dyeing fun, check out:
Maglia!
What's that? Did I mention a sale? I know you're wondering what I got. Cause you KNOW I can't pass up a yarn sale.
Truth be told, I was quite restrained this time around. All that stash-flashing really made me think.... she who dies with the most yarn wins? I only have only Rubbermaid container-full, but I should really work on some projects I already have ready before I buy MORE MORE MORE. (Unfortunately, I have champagne tastes when it comes to yarn.) I almost bought some 50% silk/50% wool that was 45% off, but to make a sleeveless shell it still would have cost $50... and I just can't justify that. So, what did I get? Just one book and some Regia self-striping sock yarn (one pair's worth).
I think there is a sweater in here that I can make for my husband. (The one on the front). Hopefully I won't screw it up this time. =)

Farewell March
Here's one last pretty pink flower for March's Project Spectrum colors. My March P.S. projects included: knitting a sock (which is red & yellow, so I'm stretching it for two months), dyeing yarn for the first time, and making the P.S. Postcard.
I've really enjoyed seeing all the red and pink projects people have been working on during March - but I am really looking forward to April (yellow & orange) because most people don't knit in those colors very often, so it will be a good way to test our creative boundaries.
Hmm.... what do I have planned for April?
- PS Postcard Swap with Patricia over at Shanghai Lily (a really neat craft blog with more than just knitting)
- Finish the red & yellow socks (for my sister)
- Dyeing yarn for the PS Hand-Dyed Yarn Swap (April entries are closed, but you can sign up for May!)
- Maybe a few other things... but I will be working on Orangina for Sexy Knitters Club (but it's definitely not orange) which is small yarn on small needles, so it might take me a while.
I think my friend Meredith and I are dyeing yarn for the swap this weekend, stay posted for details!

Hand-dyed yarn - the good and the ugly
For everyone wondering if amateur hand-dyed yarn would be, well, fugly... here's your answer: sometimes.
I usually avoid mulitcolored yarn, unless it's specifically created to be self-striping. That whole hand-painted thing is a little to random for me... and HATE HATE HATE! it when the colors pool together in my knitting. So you can imagine my dismay when I was working the garter stitch cuff of these mittens and saw the horrid pooling going on. I tried to humor myself: "maybe it will look like a candy cane! I like candy canes!" because after all, it was my first try, what could I really expect anyway? If worst came to worst I could always just dye it all red.
But oh! What a difference an extra 12 sitiches evenly distributed around the hand of the mitten make! Look at the lovely stripeys! They're all even and geogetrical and stuff... I love it. I probably will try to dye the cuffs when I finish - I just hope the second mitten looks somewhat similar to the first.
(You know you want to get in on the hand-dyed action - send me an email or leave a comment to join the Project Spectrum Hand-Dyed Sock Yarn Swap!)

March Project Spectrum sock - complete!
I made this sock a little longer than normal... and what do you know! It fits my sister's ginormo foot (size 11!) perfectly!I am saving Sock #2 for my April Project Spectum (yellow) sock project. I will post a complete Finished Object report after I finish the second sock.
The universal sock pattern worked really well. I'd like to try it with a more complicated stitch pattern. Any suggestions?
I have extended the time for sign-ups for the April edition of the Project Spectrum hand-dyed Yarn Swap to Friday, March 24! Sign up now by leaving a comment or sending me an email.

Project Spectrum Postcard Swap!
Look at this neat hand-painted postcard I got from my PS swap-pal Jennifer over at PieKnits. It just matches my hand-dyed yarn so nicely!
My favorite thing about the postcard swap is getting to know a new knitter that I would not have otherwise known. Today is the last day to sign up for April's swap - so get over to Lolly's and sign up!
Also, speaking of hand-dyed yarn, check out the hand-dyed yarn swap I am organizing in conjunction with Project Spectrum - you can sign up by leaving a comment or sending me an email. Dyeing yarn is not that hard, and lots of fun!

Project Spectrum Yarn Swap

I had so much fun making my PS postcard, and so much fun dyeing the yarn the other day.... I just thought, why not combine them? Everyone loves getting yarn, right?
Would anyone be interested in doing a hand-dyed sock yarn swap that coordinates with the colors of Project Spectrum? We can start next month (yellow & orange) if anyone is with me! Just leave a note in the comments if you want to try your hand at dyeing. The cut-off date to sign up for April will be March 24. (Deadline extended!) At that point, I'll email everyone to get your mailing address. I will send out info on your PS yarn pal on April 1. Yarn should be mailed by April 15 so it arrives within the correct color month.
UPDATED 3/23/06: This will be on a monthly basis, so you can participate as much or little as you want. You will get a new pal each month, too.
Dyeing doesn't take very long at all - maybe an hour or two plus 24-48 hours drying time, but you might want to give yourself a little extra time to practice if you've never dyed before. I know I liked my second skein a lot better than my first!
There are lots of great resources out there on Kool-Aid dyeing and dyeing techiniques - if I get enough interest I will post a list of links. As far as yarn, you can either buy light-colored yarn and dye it, or dye-your-own yarns from KnitPicks or other online sellers. Jessica~ has posted a great list of yarn resources - particularly dyeable superwash sock yarn - on here site here.

Project Spectrum Socks
I got this sock yarn from my secret pal back in January, but I've been saving it for March, when Project Spectrum is focusing on red and pink. I am normally not a fan of self-patterning yarns, but I like this one. I'm using the Universal Sock Pattern and I choose a ribbing pattern (vertical) that sort of matches the stripe pattern (horizontal) - it's an 8 st repeat: stockinette for 5 sts, seed stitch for 3 sts.
At this point, I think I am ready to start the heel flap - or I could go totally crazy and try short row heels again, does anyone have any recommendations for a good resource on short row heels, since I don't have a true "pattern" for these socks?
As you can see, the flowers are starting to bloom in Springfield. Some areas in the north of town got really bad hail Sunday night, and several smaller nearby towns were hit by tornadoes, but I was very lucky and only got some strong winds and small hail (thank goodness for a two-car garage!) All the daffodils that had started to poke their heads above ground in my yard were in full bloom the morning after the storm.

Take a sip of my special Kool-Aid
I have officially joined the sock-yarn-dyeing cult. I bought some Knitpick's Color-your-own merino sock yarn and Kool-Aid, and went to town. I am not much of one to follow directions, so I just picked some colors, looked at this site for some basic info, and plunked that yarn in the fruit-flavored water. I bought two skeins, one for myself to dye for Project Spectrum, and another for my Secret Pal, so she could dye some for herself too.*
I used the dip-dye method so I could have a variety of colors. I didn't measure out anything, so I hope it will turn out okay - if you want a more detailed description of how to get the stripes to match up with your pattern, see Eunny's description here. Apparently it turns out better if you stretch the yarn out into a REALLY long loop before dyeing. I guess that makes sense, so you get longer color repeats. I used a pretty small loop, so hopefully it will still look okay.
The yarn I used is not superwash, so I'm not sure if I really want to make socks out of it. It's not terribly thin, I'm guessing I would knit it on size 3's -- any other ideas of what I could make? Probably something with a Chevron pattern so there's not as much of a flashing/pooling problem.
I am already scheming what I am going to dye next. I don't want to go into business or anything, but I think it would make great gifts -- soooo much cheaper than buying sock yarn. I think that hank from KnitPicks from about $4, and 4 packets of Kool-Aid cost $1. But, first I have to find some superwash yarn - it's a necessity for me for socks.
* I hope she won't be disappointed, because once I started dyeing I couldn't stop! So I dyed her hank with the Kool-Aid I had purchased to send with her final package. I hope she likes it - it's one of her favorite colors!

Project Spectrum begins!
Hmmm... I knew there was a reason I don't do more crafts. My house would turn into one giant scrap pile!Well, I'm fully recuperated from the Olympics and ready to get back to blogging again. In a strange turn of events, yesterday at work I fainted, fell straight backwards, and hit my head on the marble floor. One of my co-workers drove me to the emergency room, where I mostly sat around for 6 hours, had a few blood tests, and they sent me home with the diagnosis: "People just faint sometimes." I feel fine except a massive headache where I hit my head. I know that in the ER they are really more concerned about the people gushing blood, so I'm going to go see my regular doctor in a few days to make sure I'm okay.
Anyhoo, back to crafting, yes? As you can see, I've been hard at work for my PS Postcard Swap. I also finished the One-Skein Wonder for Jeannine (no photo - it's a surprise!) and Cutaway!!!!!
The arms are a little long, which I actually like, but the sleeves also seem too big. I made the smallest size (and I'm usually a "medium" not a "small.") the wierd thing is that the body of the sweater seems to fit me fine. So maybe I'm just used to storebought sweaters with super-tight sleeves... who knows. I'll try to post a picture later today so you can see for yourself!
I've also started my first charity knitting project (ever - oh, the shame!) for 40 Days for Others. I'm making a pair of the Super Mittens from Weekend Knits in a hand-dyed buly yarn from handpaintedyarns.com. I originally bought the yarn to make a scarf, got it in the mail and hated it, but I love the way it knits up in a small project like a glove - it almost looks like subtle stripes. Okay, I'm going to stop before you hunt me down and demand photos!

Looking forward to March!
I just ordered some Dye-Your-Own merino sock yarn from Knitpicks to play with during Project Spectrum. I've never dyed yarn before, so it should be a good introduction. I know lots of people use Kool-Aid, and I've also heard of using food dyes or Easter egg dyes. Any suggestions or resources I should know about?Posted by zarah at 2:39 PM | Comments (2)
